Sorbonne Paris Nord University (known until 2020 as Paris 13 University, French: Université Sorbonne-Paris-Nord) is a French public university founded in 1970 following the reform of Parisian universities. The institution is a multidisciplinary hub based north of Paris (with its main campus in Villetaneuse) and is part of the new Sorbonne university structures, offering education in the fields of law, literature, medicine, and social sciences.
The agreement number under which the double degree programme is conducted is №Д/07.01.01/275/25 від 27.06.2025.
As a leading institution, Sorbonne Paris Nord University (USPN) aims to develop mutual cooperation and coordination in the field of academic education and scientific research with partner universities. Upon completion of the joint thesis supervision programme, the Ph.D. degree may be awarded either by both institutions simultaneously or as a single joint degree (following the appropriate approval from the USPN boards).
The following scientific departments are represented at the partner university:
- Sciences humaines et sociales (Humanities and Social Sciences);
- Droit, Économie, Gestion (Law, Economics, Management);
- Mathématiques, Informatique (Mathematics and Computer Science);
- Physique, Matériaux, SPI (Physics, Materials Science, Engineering Sciences);
- Éthologie (Ethology / Animal and Human Behavior);
- Santé, Médecine (Health, Medicine).
Education: Students study according to an approved individual learning plan (Prior Learning Agreement), which clearly defines the educational framework of the exchange, ensuring that the completed courses are credited back at the home university as part of the curriculum.
Duration of study: Under the mutual student exchange programme, the study lasts from 1 to 2 semesters. Upon completion of the semester exchange programme, no degree is awarded by the host university.
Degree award: The conferral of a Ph.D. degree under joint thesis supervision takes place after concluding a separate, specific agreement. Depending on the terms of this agreement, the student may receive either two separate Ph.D. degrees from each of the universities simultaneously, or a single joint Ph.D. degree, subject to approval by the Scientific Committee and the Administrative Board of Sorbonne Paris Nord University (USPN).
Tuition and registration fees are covered by the host Sorbonne Paris Nord University.
Expenses for accommodation, meals, and insurance are covered by the students themselves or through grants.
Semester
Duration of study: Mutual student exchange is carried out for a period of one to two semesters.
Procedure for admission and consideration of applications:
- Prior approval (Conclusion of an agreement): Student exchange is conducted within the available material capabilities and admission limits of each university.
- Drafting an individual plan: A mandatory condition for any exchange is the preliminary conclusion of an individual learning plan (Prior Learning Agreement) between the parties involved. This plan defines the educational framework of the student’s study.
- Credit transfer: Both universities undertake to do everything possible to ensure that courses completed at the host university (USPN) are officially credited at the home university (KPI) as a recognized part of the student’s curriculum.
- Joint supervision for Ph.D. students: In the case of joint thesis supervision, a separate specific agreement is additionally concluded between the universities, which regulates the entire process of Ph.D. training in detail.
Main requirements Status of participants:
- Students and Ph.D. students are eligible to participate in academic mobility (exchange).
- Mandatory insurance: All mobility students must have mandatory insurance against relevant risks (accident, illness, civil liability), as well as insurance in case of possible repatriation during their stay abroad.
Required documents
- Prior learning plan (Prior Learning Agreement), which details the educational exchange programme.
- A separate specific agreement — required exclusively for Ph.D. students entering the joint thesis supervision programme (cotutelle).
- Health and civil liability insurance policies (including coverage for repatriation expenses).
